Ian Callum's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is apparently in the final bodywork stages. 'I didn't want to detract from the original Mk2, just imagine what an 'R' version might have been like'

I really is isn't it?

It's also exactly the way I think of modifying classics:

'what would an after-hours skunkworks back in the day have created?'

So what we should take from this is that Ian is planning a blag of some kind.

I'm thrilled to know that Callum, probably my favorite current car designer, likes some of my own favorite cars. And for anyone who doesn't think the S-Type looked good—just look at that incredible Mk2, and realize the S-Type was the Mk2 for the 2000s. I would love to have had a 'Mk2 R', but the S-Type R was pretty close.

Part of what I love about the MkII is that it was really the M5 of that time. A very fast, sporty 4-door large saloon. Gorgeous things.

I must say that the S-Type doesn't do all that much for me, but I can't argue that they're not really, really good cars. I hear very little but good things about them, and they could be had in 3.0l V6 manual form.

Actually, I wonder how much torque that manual 'box could take. As far as I know, the AJV6 is the basis of the F-Type V6 engine. An idea is forming.

Regarding the S-Type, that's very interesting. Never realized that it was available (even if it was only for two years) with a manual. According to wikipeda, the diesel variant was available with a manual, and that produced 435 Nm of torque, although the most powerful petrol variant with a manual produced only 293. The V6 F-Type with the AJ126 produces 450 Nm of torque...so theoretically, it might be possible? I'm curious why the manual was available across the S-Type line, save for the S-Type R, though.

I have heard that the early variants had more creeping problems than even a Jaguar ought to have, late in life, and that they handled a little worse than they ought, too. But I still regard them as relatively attractive vehicles, and wouldn't mind driving one (although I'd prefer an XJR or XK). On that front, I wish Ian Callum's R-Coupe concept had been produced, I thought it was quite beautiful, with the same sort of design cues as the S-Type, but better executed.

Oh I remember that one. The small hatchbacky thing. I rather liked that too. Shame they didn't have the budget to play around back then.

The Jag I'm sore about not being put into production is the gorgeous Bertone B99. Even just a limited run would have been brilliant.
